TBM Wienerwald Tunnel - Steps towards successful tunnelling
This article reports on incidents and measures which accompanied the implementation of the Wienerwald Tunnel project. The new railway section under construction between Vienna and St. Pölten in Lower Austria is a significant feature of a four-track development project on Austria's Western Railway. The heart of this section is the Wienerwald Tunnel of 13.356 km length, situated between the outskirts of Vienna to the east and the Tullnerfeld plain to the west. The tunnel is two-track over a length of 2.2 km before branching into two single-track tubes running almost parallel for about 10.9 km to their western portals in the Tullnerfeld plain. The use of tunnel boring machines was considered at an early project phase. The contract was finally awarded to the best bidder and therefore in favour of mechanical tunnelling. Consequently, the single-track twin tunnels covering a length of 10.73 km were driven using two identical single-shield tunnelling machines (TBM-S) with a boring diameter of 10.68 m. The success of mechanical tunnelling dependents very much on a smooth interplay of the main parameters: rock mass, TBM, crew, organization, logistics.
