Advances in thickener technology for waterborne coatings
Water-based binders which make it possible to formulate low-solvent lacquers for wood are attracting more and more attention in the light of changing legislation (e.g. in Europe) and growing environmental awareness on the part of end users. Here, water-based acrylic emulsions are becoming increasingly important, being suitable for making low-solvent products. A comparison of conventional acrylic copolymer dispersions with those of multistage polymers (heterogeneous emulsions) was made. Their minimum film forming temperature (MFFT) and glass transition temperature (Tg) were investigate, as well as properties such as blocking resistance, pendulum hardness and elongation at break in waterborne clear varnishes.
