Design of slewing gears on the basis of new fatigue strength calculation rules
The slewing gear for the bucket wheel excavator superstructure serves to generate the slewing movement of the bucket wheel which is necessary for surface mining. The slewing gear consists of a slewing bearing (ball race or roller bearing) and a slewing gear unit. The following two load cases are relevant for the design of the slewing gear: (1) The force when the excavator is in operation and (2) the forces when the excavator is idle. In order to ensure an adequately operation the slewing gear can be equipped with accessories such as an overload clutch, a service brake, or a holding brake. During the course of modernisation for an entire family of bucket wheel excavators a new development of the slewing gear units was ordered. In dimensioning of the gear units special emphasis was placed on the strength analysis adequate for the stresses, calculated on the basis of the FKM guideline 154 'Rechnerischer Festigkeitsnachweis für Maschinenbauteile'. Krupp Fördertechnik decided to split the total transmission of 1:1000 between one main gear unit and three different pre-stage gear units. The power which can be transmitted per gear unit is 80 kW, the output torque is 400 kNm per pinion (with two pinions per unit). The total weight of one gear unit is 15 t.
