Users experiences with tightness of flanged joints
The correct function of tightening joints is of interest regarding safety as well as economical aspects of industrial utilities. However, even if a correct function has to be guaranteed, the data supplied by the manufacturers of the gaskets and the components are not sufficient. Problems become more obvious, if the demands become more and more specific (e.g. if a certain leak rate has to be achieved or emissions have to be reduced). To demonstrate or prove a correct function, the manufacturers provide data based on different sources, like experience, use of standardized parts (flanges, bolts, gasket), laboratory tests, 1 to 1 scale tests, calculations etc. These data and their limitations are discussed in the paper from an end-users point of view. Then the presuppositions, which are necessary for a correct function of a joint are evaluated. The most important parameters are discussed in detail. A systematic procedure is shown, which results in an improvement of the function of tightening joints. Finally, it is summarized that the end-user still has to take care, that the procedure and the data used to prove a reliable function of his tightening joints are correct.
