A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The Torino-Milano motorway links the largest industrial and business centres of Northern Italy. There is a very high traffic volume of more than 30 million vehicles per annum, 25 % of which consisting of heavy ones. In 1994 the asphalt surfacing showed numerous signs of degradation mainly affecting the slow lane. This situation has led to a scheduled programme of works on the surface to lengthen the life duration of the carriageway awaiting a planned modernisation of the motorway. Since the thickness of the asphalt surfacing could not be increased it was chosen to insert an asphalt impregnated geotextile reinforcement in the motorway structure in order to absorb stresses developing at the surface layer base. A thermobonded polypropylene filament nonwoven geotextile, DuPont's Typar 3487, was chosen for the reinforcement. It has the required mechanical properties: a high initial modulus associated with a high breaking elongation. For the asphalt surfacing, modified asphalt with elastomers and/or plastomers was selected. A first 3 km long experimental section of a heavy traffic lane was built in 1994. After two years of use no carriageway settlements have been noted. Consequently, the new structure allows a gain of several years of lifetime. The positive results led the technical management staff to achieve around 80 km of additional works on heavy vehicle lanes in both directions of the motorway. (Bilingual document: French/English)
