Common House Workshop
The main complication in doing an anthropological‐based design in the context of growing toward community‐enhanced design is that it's not only about who they are now, but who they hope to become. When it comes to prioritizing the spaces in the common house, number one and two are always cooking and dining. This chapter discusses Quimper Village Cohousing's program and design criteria for their common house and other community facilities. It summarizes the desired activities, priorities, and design criteria agreed to by the resident group during a programming workshop. The overlapping values and aspirations within the group became obvious and with each discussion, the opportunity to reach our potential as individuals, and as a community, came further into focus. In this project, the common house would embrace the sun when it was present, but would also be designed to function well during the146 days annually with precipitation.
