The private house design is such an important place of self‐expression, self‐confidence, political representation, self‐worth, taste, and intention. This chapter discusses the Quimper Village Cohousing’s program and the design criteria that the author and team undertook for their private houses. Most people in cohousing spend the majority of their outdoor time on their front porch. Rather than focusing on the typical American Dream (a big house with a bigger garage), consider the life one aspires. A life in cohousing is different from a life in a typical suburban home (which is why most cohousers choose cohousing). Because of shared common space, private houses in cohousing are ample, yet more modest than typical single‐family houses. They provide a balance of privacy and community. All units were designed with attention to natural light and transitions from public to private space, or “soft edges,” such as front porches.
