Multi‐storey Building with Moment Resisting Frames
This chapter illustrates and discusses the main design steps and the verifications required by EC8‐1 for a multistorey building equipped with moment resisting frames (MRFs). It provides a general description of the geometric features and design assumptions. The chapter presents the assumptions for structural modelling and the methods of analysis adopted to calculate the seismic induced effects. It discusses the design and verifications for both ultimate limit state and damage limitation limit state. The effects of seismic action were determined by means of a linear elastic modal response spectrum analysis. The non‐linear modelling of the structural behaviour is a crucial issue that significantly influences the accuracy and the effectiveness of the structural assessment. A nonlinear static pushover analysis is performed for illustrative purposes only, as the multistorey building would not require such an advanced approach. Nevertheless, the nonlinear pushover analysis confirms the adequacy of the design.
