DE‐CARBONIZING DESIGN
This chapter describes the greatest source of a building designer’s agency at the project’s initial preparation phase to two of its fundamental preconditions: the way in which a building is to be used, and the piece of ground that it will occupy. Sustainable building rating systems have played an undeniable role in increasing professional and public awareness, building consensus among project team members, providing indicators, setting targets and establishing benchmarks for building performance and, ultimately reducing building sector impacts. Project preparation or pre‐design entails a series of analyses and decisions by which a client or development team cements important parameters that may affect, to varying degrees, the options the design team has to reduce a building’s carbon footprint. For the decarbonized building project, every effort to reduce emissions or energy consumption must be substantiated and reinforced through decisions made in subsequent phases of design.
