Vehicle Scanning of Bridge Frequencies

This chapter demonstrates the feasibility of measuring the fundamental bridge frequency from the dynamic response recorded of a vehicle during its passage over the bridge. The bridge selected is the Da‐Wu‐Lun Bridge, completed in 2000, which forms part of the Taiwan Provincial Highway No. 2 near the northern coast of Taiwan. The vehicle system mainly used for measurement is a tractor‐trailer. The technique presented can be used for scanning the first bridge frequency. To scan the second and higher frequencies of the bridge requires further improvement in the level of resolution for the fast Fourier transform and the precision of the instrumentation in collecting the data. The dynamic characteristics of the test cart are investigated before it is actually put into use. The test cart can be regarded as a single sprung mass system with regard to the vertical motion.
