Vehicle Scanning of Bridge Frequencies
Simple Theory
This chapter presents the simplest and fundamental theory for extracting bridge frequencies from a moving test vehicle. It develops a technique for extracting the fundamental frequency of the bridge from the response of the passing vehicle, rather than from the bridge response, the inherent lack of capability of the single‐mode approach to deal with the higher modes of the bridge is not considered a handicap. The chapter describes the accuracy of the single‐mode closed‐form solution obtained for the vehicle bridge interaction (VBI) system, in particular, the vehicle response, will be verified by the finite element solution for a typical example. It extracts the fundamental frequency of the bridge from the time‐history vertical vibration response of the vehicle obtained by the finite element method, which is more “realistic” than the analytical one due to inclusion of the high‐mode effect.
