Elevator Traffic Calculation Methods
Elevator cycle time was introduced as early as in the 1960s. It reveals all the essential delays in elevator performance. Elevator group handling capacity determines the number of passengers the elevator group can transport from the lobby to upper floors within a five‐minute period without waiting. Elevator handling capacity is related to the number of elevators in a group, the rated load of the cars and their speeds. The development of traffic planning theory started already in the 1920s by the elevator consultant engineer Basset Jones who derived an equation for the probable number of lift stops in up‐peak. The chapter discusses more advanced up‐peak formulas considering Poisson arrival process, uneven floor heights and generalized up‐peak formulas involving all traffic situations. The general analysis gives round trip time of a single elevator system in a balanced mixed traffic situation.
