Determination of Nitrogen Trichloride in Water
This study compares diethylpara‐ phenylene diamine (DPD) results for chlorine and chloramines in water with total chlorine figures obtained iodometrically. A discrepancy arises whenever NCl3 is present, because only half of this compound is recovered. This half appears in the dichloramine fraction. The remaining half of the NCl3, however, can be made to react in the free chlorine fraction by adding a small amount of potassium iodide. In this way the total NCl3 content may be obtained and the dichloramine reading corrected for the NCl3 that appears with it. These conclusions apply only to the low concentrations of NCl3 that may be formed in the chlorination of waters or obtained by diluting freshly prepared stock solutions. Solutions of NCl3 that have been allowed to stand before dilution give inconsistent results.
