Application of Electrospun Materials in Water Treatment
The enhanced industrial and domestic waste dumping into water reservoirs has been a crucial concern as it may cause distinct perilous health issues on ingestion beyond a certain tolerance daily intake (TDI). The major water contaminants present in water bodies are heavy metal ions, dyes, oil/water mixture, microbes, and antibiotics. The electrospinning technique has the potential to solve this problem because of its flexibility to modify the drawn fibers, both chemically and physically. Researchers have investigated various biodegradable or synthetic electrospun materials for the wastewater treatment by removal of these contaminants. In this chapter, the adsorption capacity of heavy metal ions (U6+, Hg2+, As3+, As5+, Cr6+) and dyes (RB5, MB, IC, MG) by distinct electrospun materials are found to be in the range of 11.09–455.5 mg/g and 154.4–826.4 mg/g, respectively. The maximum oil/water (diesel, petrol, kerosene, sunflower oil, gingelly oil) separation efficiency falls in the range of 99.16–98%. The maximum bacterial cells (Gram‐positive and negative) reduction is found to be 99.99% (E. coli). The adsorption capacity of antibiotics (tetracycline and fluoroquinolones, including ciprofloxacin, danofloxacin, enrofloxacin) is in the range of 93–112 mg g−1 and 257.0.7 mg g−1, respectively. These electrospun materials are also reusable and recyclable for further water treatment.
