Intergenerational Neighborhood Design
Common House and Common Facilities Design
The heart of the community, the soul of the place, and the place where people are going to stitch it all together is the common house, a place where people spend time voluntarily. This chapter presents the author and team's design in a project where a neighborhood of single‐family houses asked them to design a new common building (technically an outbuilding to one of the houses) to meet their needs and desires for facilitating an enhanced community. The common terrace and part of the common facilities are on the second floor at Walnut Commons in Santa Cruz. There are lots of anthropological ways to understand the essence of a group’s values such as bubble sorting a list or prioritizing the potential common facilities. Two new common houses in the area inspired an existing neighborhood to make their own, accomplished with The Cohousing Company, capable contractors, and a lot of sweat equity.
