Methods of Moment with Box‐Cox Transformation
The direct methods of moment require neither iterations nor computation of derivatives of the performance function, so are therefore convenient for finite‐element based structural reliability analysis. This chapter investigates the application of Box‐Cox transformation for dealing with the performance functions for structural reliability, and introduces a criterion to determine the optimal Box‐Cox transformation parameter that makes the transformed performance function approximately normally distributed. The total computational effort of the methods of moment combined with Box‐Cox transformation is equivalent with that of the direct methods of moment. The methods of moment with Box‐Cox transformation can provide sufficiently accurate results even when the structural reliability analysis involves nonnormally distributed, nonlinear, or implicit performance function with small failure probability, correlated random variables or stochastic processes.
