Epoxy paving cement fights bridge deck wear
Surfacing upper and lower concrete decks of Mystic River Bridge in Boston with epoxy/coal tar resinous paving cement to seal them against salt solutions and moisture is described; paving cement is Guardkote 140, developed by Shell Chemical Co; cement is black, thermosetting liquid epoxy resin/coal tar compound; two parts are mixed in equal proportions by weight just before use and cure through chemical reaction to inert tough solid with good flexibility; decks were cleaned before application by use of automatic machine which applied hydrochloric acid at rate of 12 gpm.
