The invention relates to a preparation method of fine grain mullite ceramic. The preparation method comprises the following steps of preparing mullite precursor powder by a sol-gel method, and carrying out sintering by a spark plasma fast-heating technology, wherein in the sintering, through change of a sintering heating rate and thermal insulation time, under the control of crystal grain growth, densification is realized and the fine grain mullite ceramic is obtained. Technical key points of the preparation method comprise an appropriate heating rate, a heating rate temperature turning point and thermal insulation time. Through the technical key points, the fine grain mullite ceramic is prepared. The preparation method has simple processes, a low cost and short sintering time. The fine grain mullite ceramic has fine crystal grains, high density and high infrared transmittance.
