The invention discloses a preparation method of gradient porous mullite ceramic. The preparation method of the gradient porous mullite ceramic comprises the following steps: 1) mixing 38-53 parts by mass of aluminium compound, 20-30 parts by mass of coal gangue and 23-36 parts by mass of biomass powder, then adding additives, uniformly mixing, adding right amount 5% (in weight ratio) of polyvinyl alcohol solution, grinding and pelletizing, and sieving, so as to obtain mixture; 2) selecting different biomass powders, and repeating the steps, so as to obtain mixtures composed of different biomass powders; 3) sequentially putting the different mixtures into a mould in layers; carrying out jump vibration after filling, and carrying out compression moulding, so as to obtain a mixture body; and 4) sintering the mixture body in a high temperature furnace, and carrying out furnace cooling, so that the gradient porous mullite ceramic is obtained.
