The invention discloses a thermal insulation material and a preparation method thereof. The thermal insulation material comprises the following components in parts by weight: 37-60 parts of aggregate, 20-25 parts of powder, 10-25 parts of a binding agent, 0.5-1 part of a foaming agent, 0.2-0.25 part of a dispersing agent and 0.1-0.2 part of a water reducing agent, the aggregate is one of light ceramsite, light brick sand, waste electrical porcelain, high-alumina bauxite and a mullite-cordierite composite material; the powder is one or a mixture of more of flint clay powder, alumina powder, mullite powder and corundum powder; the binding agent is Portland cement or aluminate cement; and the foaming agent is an anionic surfactant.
