The invention provides a thermal insulation material and a preparation method thereof. An exhaust component is pre-buried in core material powder and extends to the surface layer of the core material powder, the exhaust component is subjected to compression molding through a compression mold along with the core material powder, and the compression molding further comprises a normal-temperature pre-pressing stage and a heating compression molding stage; the exhaust component is a hollow part, a plurality of through holes are formed in the surface of the exhaust component, and a cavity in the hollow part further communicates with the outside through the through holes. The heat insulation material is prepared through integral compression molding, hot press molding is carried out after compression molding at normal temperature, and the cohesiveness between the exhaust component and powder can be improved, so that the whole core material forms a more compact structure. According to the thermal insulation material and the preparation method thereof, air in the powder in the powder pressing process can be exhausted, and a compact core material is prepared.
