Smoke or Fire Barrier
The present invention relates to a smoke or fire barrier (1, figure 1) for closing an opening (6, figure 1) in a building with a means for reducing the flow of smoke past the sides of the barrier. The barrier comprises a curtain (2, figure 1) for closing the opening; a means arrangeable at a head (4, figure 1) of the opening for deploying and retracting the curtain; and a guide (17, figure 1) means at sides of the opening for retaining edges of the curtain after deployment and for reducing flow of smoke past the edges of the curtain. The guide means comprises a pair of jaws or side plates 18, 20 for holding the edges of the deployed curtain, wherein upon activation at least one of the jaws 20 is movable towards the other 18. The mechanism is activated electrically by means of a switch that may be disposed towards the lower end of the guide means so that the switch may be triggered by the deployed fire curtain. A means for moving the or each movable jaw after deployment of the curtain and a door for covering the guide means when not in use are also included.
