Draft environmental impact statement: Silver Fire Recovery Project, Siskiyou National Forest: Josephine and Curry counties, Oregon. Volume 1 ; Silver Fire Recovery Project; Siskiyou National Forest, Silver Fire Recovery Project
SD428 .S55 1988a ; A 13.92/2:Si 8/3 v.1 ; 424 ; Cover title: Silver Fire Recovery Project.; Includes ill. and maps.; Includes bibliographical references. ; The Siskiyou National Forest has developed eight alternatives for managing the 42,900 acre Silver Fire Recovery Project Area. This portion of the Forest is north of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness and burned during the August-November 1987 Silver Complex Fire. Alternative A is a 'no action' alternative . Alternative D would salvage almost all merchantable timber killed by the fire with a combination of helicopter logging and road construction to accommodate cable yarding. Alternative E would emphasize watershed recovery and would salvage an amount of timber consistent with that objective. A major portion of the area would remain unroaded in Alternative F, which emphasizes recreation, wildlife, and scenic values. Alternative G calls for the most road construction for both current and future timber management. The greatest return to counties and the Federal government would be provided by Alternative H, which emphasizes economically efficient timber salvage. Alternative I, the Preferred Alternative, combines the recovery of burned timber with watershed protection and rehabilitation. Roads would not be constructed and no timber would be salvaged in Alternative J, which emphasizes resource rehabilitation, reforestation, and enhancement" P. i [2].
