A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Construction methods of U S Bureau of Reclamation concrete dam on Big Horn River, Montana, are described; leading dimensions of dam are -- height 520 ft, crest length 1450 ft, top width 22 ft, bottom width 145 ft, and concrete volume 1,460,000 cu yd; dam was designed as variable-center arch and structure was analyzed by trial-load method; axis radius is 800 ft; maximum computed compressive stress at abutments are 749 psi for normal full reservoir, dead load and temperature change and 861 psi for all loads including earthquake; maximum computed stress for all conditions at any point is 879 psi; maximum tensile stress is 621 psi and minimum computed factor of safety is four.
