New ideas at Yellowtail dam
Major arch dam at remote Montana site, when finished in 1965, will have height of 520 ft, crest length of 1450 ft, base width of 178 ft, and crest width of 25 ft; building of dam will require excavation of nearly 1,500,000 cu yd of earth and rock from keyways, foundation, spillway tunnel and diversion tunnel, and placement of 1,675,000 cu yd of concrete; bulking material for grout; new tunneling methods; unusual aggregate system; cooling by immersion; concrete batching and handling.
