Clyde tunnel -- Design, construction and tunnel services
Design and construction methods adopted for road tunnel in particularly variable and difficult ground and equipment provided to meet requisite standards of lighting and ventilation are described; tunnel comprises twin two-lane tunnels constructed beneath River Clyde downstream from Glasgow, through rock overlain by variable alluvial deposits; heavy cast-iron lining was designed to satisfy arduous and diverse driving conditions; portals and approaches were constructed in heavy reinforced concrete; greater part of each approach is beneath water-table and special problem of resisting flotation was solved by use of large-diameter tension piles.
