Clyde tunnel -- Constructional problems
Constructional methods employed and difficulties encountered in driving twin cast-iron lined tunnels of 29 ft 6 in. diam under River Clyde; arrangements for compressed-air working and of shields and other plant used are described; progress of work was seriously affected by variable strata encountered which necessitated advance ground treatment on considerable scale; great care was exercised with compression and decompression of compressed air workers; difficulties which arose from unexpected ground conditions in deep excavation for one of cut-and-cover portal structures.
