Reclamation firsts -- Underground power plant at morrow point dam
Dam, on Upper Colorado River, is high, thin concrete arch, 465 ft high and 52 ft in maximum thickness; it will contain 360,000 cu yd of concrete, mostly placed in summers of 1965 and 1966; powerhouse is being built underground for protection from falling rock, extreme weather and possible enemy action; powerhouse will have exposed walls but metal ceiling to catch moisture and rock spalls; roof will be held with rock bolts, some of them equipped with load-cells to measure stress and indicate possible anchor failure.
