Reasons are given for use of steel instead of reinforced concrete for new winding tower of Kaiser Wilhelm shaft of Hohenzollern coal mine; one of main considerations was possibility of building new tower without interfering with use of existing steam winding equipment; clinker brickwork filling is used; two electric winding engines have sheaves of 21 1/2 ft. diam. and speed of 49 ft. per sec.
