It is shown that under most mining conditions mathematical model of cylindrical tunnel of infinite length excavated in homogeneous isotropic rock is valid; air temperature may be taken as constant, providing variation with time is slow; effect of surface coefficient of heat transfer on cooling; influence of water on rock cooling is compared with "drying out" of moist porous solid. (See also - n 5122 Apr 30 1959 p 533-40; Instn Min. Engrs -- Trans v 118 pt 6 Mar 1959 p 355-75 (discussion) 75-9)
