It is shown that under most mining conditions mathematical model of cylindrical tunnel of infinite length excavated in homogeneous isotropic rock is valid; air temperature may be taken as constant, providing variation with time is slow; effect of surface coefficient of heat transfer on cooling; influence of water on rock cooling is compared with "drying out" of moist porous solid. (See also - discussion p 75-9; Colliery Guardian v 198 n 5122, 5123 Apr 30 1959 p 533-40, May 7 p 565-70)
