Furnas hydro-electric scheme, Brazil -- Closure of diversion tunnels
During closures of diversion tunnels on Furnas hydroelectric scheme on Rio Grande, Brazil, formidable difficulties were encountered from methane gas released when water leakage at gates suffered pressure drop of some 120 psi; explosions occurred which resulted in flows in excess of 150 cu m/sec through partly completed concrete plugs in tunnels (see Engineering Index 1959 p 630); paper deals only with work involved in overcoming difficulties caused by explosions.
