Newport by-pass motorway
Completion of final link in Wales at approach to and from Severn bridge; basic construction of roadways and hard shoulders consists of 4 in. of hot rolled asphalt on 3 in. of bitumen macadem on base of lean concrete 7 in. thick; highway layout; Crindau tunnels accommodate 24 ft roadway and two 3 ft emergency walkways; tunnels are 1180 ft long from portal to portal; PVC lining is provided up to total height of approximately 17 ft in tunnel; approximately two million cu yd of material were excavated and formed into embankments or removed from site.
