The invention discloses silicon carbide foamed ceramic and a preparation method thereof. The method comprises the steps of preparing a primary impregnant, wherein the primary impregnant comprises a flame retardant, polysiloxane and water; impregnating a viscose fiber felt to the primary impregnant to obtain a primarily-impregnated felt, wherein the viscose fiber felt has the fiber diameter of 2-20mu m, the density of 0.03-0.16g/ and the thickness of 0.2-30mm; and dehydrating the primarily-impregnated felt to obtain an organic carrier; preparing a secondary impregnant, wherein the secondary impregnant is ceramic slurry; impregnating the organic carrier to the secondary impregnant to obtain a secondarily-impregnated felt; and pyrolyzing the secondarily-impregnated felt to obtain the silicon carbide foamed ceramic. The silicon carbide foamed ceramic prepared by using the preparation method has high strength, high aperture ratio and high thermal shock resistance and simultaneously has filtering and adsorbing effects, is suitable for catalyst carriers and filtered purified materials and can be widely applied to the fields of heat insulation, heat exchange, mixing and the like.
