The invention discloses an improved building block and an ecological retaining wall formed by improved blocks. On one hand, the improved building block comprises a building block body, an inner cavityfor planting a plant is formed in the building block body, the upper end of the inner cavity is opened, a contact opening for the plant to restore contact with soil of the back of the wall is formedin one side at the bottom of the inner cavity, and thus a vertically-through planting structure is formed. Baffles used for exposing the inner cavity by set size and fixing the wall body when a perpendicular wall body or an avoided inclined wall body is formed are symmetrically arranged on the left side wall and the right side wall of the building block body, at least two pairs of baffles are symmetrically arranged on the building block body, the building block bodies in the wall are matched and are in contact through the baffles, and the height of the baffles is the same as that of the side walls of the building block bodies. On the other hand, the ecological retaining wall is further provided. By means of the improved building block and the ecological retaining wall, the ecological function can be effectively improved while the retaining function is effectively ensured.
