The invention particularly relates to a method for preparing a building material by using asbestos tailings, the method for preparing the building material by usingthe asbestos tailings comprises the following steps: pretreatment of asbestos tailings: crushing and sieving; harmless treatment of acid leaching of asbestos tailings: adding sulfuric acid into the asbestos tailings pretreated in the first step, standing and soaking, and obtaining a magnesium sulfate-containing acid leaching mixture; and 2, preparation of the asbestos tailing building material: stirring light calcined magnesia, a modifier, a water reducer and the magnesium sulfate-containing acid leaching mixture obtained in the step 2 until slurry is uniform, pouring the obtained slurry into a mold for vibration or pressure molding, and curing to obtain the asbestos tailing building material. According to the method for directly preparing the magnesium oxysulfate building material by using the asbestos tailings, the treatment problem of the asbestos tailings is effectively solved, the production cost of the magnesium oxysulfate cement is reduced, the treatment cost of the tailings is saved, and good economic benefits and ecological benefits can be obtained.
