The invention discloses a concrete viscosity modifier and a preparation method thereof. The concrete viscosity modifier is prepared from the following main raw materials in parts by weight: 0.1 to 8 parts of amylopectin, 1 to 8 parts of butanediol, 1 to 12 parts of dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether, 10 to 40 parts of welan gum, 10 to 20 parts of cyclodextrine, 0.2 to 0.8 part of sodium polyacrylate, 0.1 to 0.5 part of carbamide, 0.1 to 10 parts of sodium hydroxide and 900.7 to 977.5 parts of deionized water. The viscosity modifier provided by the invention is simple in synthesis process, can be synthesized at normal temperature, is low in energy consumption, is prepared from easily available and harmless raw materials, is green and environment-friendly, and is suitable for industrial production; and the viscosity modifier can solve the concrete state problem caused by fault gradation of machine-made sand, improve the wrapping property and workability of concrete, and improve the pumpability of the concrete.
