The invention discloses a sectional type steel formwork system for settlement joint construction and a construction method. The system comprises a sectional type steel formwork unit, a steel formwork width adjusting unit arranged on the sectional type steel formwork unit and a gear transmission unit arranged on the steel formwork width adjusting unit. The sectional type steel formwork unit comprises a first sectional type steel formwork and a second sectional type steel formwork which are oppositely arranged in parallel in a spaced mode. Each of the first sectional type steel formwork and the second sectional type steel formwork comprises at least two steel formworks which are spliced with each other and can adapt to construction of shear walls with different lengths; the steel formwork width adjusting units are arranged between every two opposite steel formworks on the first sectional type steel formwork and the second sectional type steel formwork. The gear transmission unit is driven to act through an external motor, the first sectional type steel formwork and the second sectional type steel formwork are driven to move in the direction close to or away from each other, and the distance between the first sectional type steel formwork and the second sectional type steel formwork is made to meet the construction requirements of settlement joints with different joint widths.
