The invention relates to gypsum-based colored facing mortar with high water resistance and a preparation method thereof. The gypsum-based colored facing mortar comprises 30-40% of phosphorus high-strength gypsum, 50-60% of quartz sand, 1-2% of heavy calcium powder, 1-3% of an additive and 5-7% of pigment, wherein the addition amount of water is 40-50% of the total mass of the gypsum and the heavy calcium powder; the additives comprise 0.5%-1.5% of redispersible latex powder, 0.05%-0.2% of starch ether, 0.05%-0.2% of a water-retaining agent, 0.1%-0.5% of a water repellent and 0.01%-0.2% of a retarder. The gypsum-based colored facing mortar disclosed by the invention has the advantages of good water resistance, no scumming, no hollowing and cracking, high bonding strength, stable and rich color, good weather resistance and the like, does not have undesirable phenomena after being placed outdoors for a long time, and can be suitable for decorating inner walls and outer walls of buildings.
