The invention relates to a method for renewing sleepers (3) of a track (4), rails (13) being lifted from the sleepers (3) after rail-fastening means (2) have been loosened, and the sleepers (3) being replaced. According to the invention, the rail-fastening means are loosened such that the rail-fastening means (2) arranged in each case on either side next to a rail (13) are pushed apart by means of a spreading device (1) until a clear distance between the rail-fastening means (2) is greater than a base width of the rail. The invention further relates to a device for carrying out the method.
