PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method that imparts superior design and weatherability to a substrate which has protrusions on its surface and whose protrusions and other portions are coated respectively with coating materials of different color tones, and a coated body obtained by using the coating method.SOLUTION: A coating method includes a step of forming a patterned coating film, by coating a patterned coating material containing coloring particles that are obtained by encapsulating an emulsion coating material with gelation film, onto an entire coating surface of a substrate which has protrusions on its surface and whose protrusions and other portions are coated respectively with coating materials of different color tones. In the coating method, the content of the coloring particles in the patterned coating material is 1 to 25 mass% relative to the total amount of the patterned coating material.
