Mortars for Stabilised Compressed Earth Block Masonry
The masonryMasonry is an assemblage of the masonry unitsMasonry unit (such as brick or block) and the mortar. The mortar plays an important role in the masonry construction, by stitching the masonryMasonry units into an assemblage and preventing the moisture ingress through the joints. Also, the fresh mortar can take care of the dimensional imperfections of the masonry unitsMasonry unit while laying the masonry units over the fresh mortar bed joint. Various aspects of mortar as applicable to masonry construction are discussed in this chapter. Details of mortar constituents, mortar preparation, types of mortars, workability and shrinkage, masonry bond strength using composite mortars and stress-strain characteristics of mortars are provided. The chapter ends with guidelines for selecting mortars for different types of masonry and a note on the cement-soil composite mortars.
