Greening wood coatings. High performance wood coatings without formaldehyde or isocyanate
A partially butylated, modified urea-based resin was used as a formaldehyde- and isocyanate-free crosslinker for different acrylic polyols. The new crosslinker technology makes it feasible to formulate solvent based wood coatings which cure under ambient or low energy conditions. These coating systems have the potential to meet the desired performance and appearance properties of current industrial wood systems. Worker and consumer safety issues can be overcome while maintaining comparable performance. The extended catalyzed pot life leads to cost savings from reduced waste at manufacturing sites and reduces the rework common with the application of unstable coatings. The new system compliments other recent work on low-temperature-cure melamine crosslinkers and water based, UV-cure resin technology.
