A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism

In Los Angeles, environmental activist groups have crucially stressed negative ecological, economic and aesthetic consequences of the river‐engineering practices and the lack of public involvement in traditional planning regarding the watershed. Friends of the L.A. River and other volunteer organisations have devised a range of educational activities, encouraging ecological restoration and neighbourhood connectivity. As a result, local communities have participated at multiple levels in recent projects, through community meetings, public workshops, and events. The Los Angeles River Master Plan ‐ implemented in 1991, devised and adopted in 2007 ‐ focuses on the revitalisation of the river's ecological functions while providing green spaces.
