The invention relates to a preparation method of silicon nitride powder, which comprises the following steps: mixing and grinding silicon dioxide powder, a carbon source powder material, initial silicon nitride powder and a solvent, and then drying to obtain precursor powder; wherein the content of alpha-phase silicon nitride in the initial silicon nitride powder is controlled; and nitriding the precursor powder, and then carrying out decarburization to obtain the target silicon nitride powder. In the preparation process of the precursor, silicon nitride fine powder with preset alpha-phase silicon nitride content is added as an inducer, so that the temperature of the nitridation reaction is reduced, the excessive development of crystal grains in the nitridation process is inhibited, and finally, the alpha-phase content of 95% or above is obtained.
