The invention provides a method for preparing high-strength ceramsite by utilizing engineering spoil. The method comprises the following steps: a, crushing and ball-milling the engineering spoil into powder; b, mixing the engineering spoil powder, an auxiliary agent and water to prepare a spherical ceramsite green body; c, naturally airing the ceramsite green body for 60 to 120 minutes; and d, presintering the ceramsite at 400-500 DEG C for 10-30 minutes, roasting at 1100-1200 DEG C for 10-30 minutes, and cooling to room temperature, thereby obtaining the ceramsite. According to the invention, efficient utilization of engineering spoil is realized, occupation of spoil to storage land is reduced, pollution of engineering spoil to air and environment is avoided, exploitation of gravel resources is reduced, and the technical problems of high additive proportion, low spoil utilization rate, low compressive strength of single ceramsite and high water absorption in the prior art are solved.
