Subsurface Investigation, Section L002, L'Enfant Plaza-Pentagon Route River Crossing
Results are summarized of 24 borings of the Washington Metropolitan Area Metro system made in Section L002 of the L'Enfant Plaza-Pentagon Route River Crossing between East Potomac Park and West Potomac Park on a line parallel to the Rochambeau Bridge. The investigation was made to determine subsurface conditions at the locations of bridge piers to be constructed in open water plus the abutments and retained fills for approaches on either shore of the Potomac. The report contains a continuous geological section through these borings along the line of the structure, results of a substantial number of laboratory tests on undisturbed soil samples, conclusions regarding subsoil properties and a summary of anticipated design and construction problems.
