A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
RoboSense-A climbing robot to examine bridges and dams
The inspection of large concrete constructions like bridges, dams, stacks and cooling towers with autonomous mobile systems is still a unsolved problem. The difficulties of this task arise form one hand side development a very flexible platform and on the other side from the design adequate inspection sensor. The requirements to the platform are the movement at horizontally and vertically surfaces and the ability to include payload, manipulator and the inspection system. The whole concept of a service robot for the inspection of bridges and dams is described which includes the robot design, control architecture, inspection sensors and positioning system. The mobile robot was built as a wheel driven vehicle, with a low vacuum camber which allows moving in each direction on flat surfaces. At the moment the different subsystems like mechatronics of the vehicle, inspections sensors, position system and the manipulator are developed as first prototypes. Research has been carried out in the frame of the European RoboSense project (Number IST-11976). Project partners of the RoboSense consortium are IT Innovation (England), Portech (England), FZI (Germany), BAM (Germany) and ENEL (Italy).
